Overview

The brief

A historic club with a dated site and a pro shop that shut when the doors did. The new site had to welcome, convert and sell.

Built for two audiences: first-time visitors and weekly members. Plus a store, so the shop never closes.

The challenge

What was in the way

The club’s existing site was working against the business rather than for it:

  • The site looked older than the club felt, and a first-time visitor deciding whether to book a round had no reason to trust it.
  • The pro shop only opened when someone was behind the till, so a member wanting a glove or a box of balls on a Tuesday evening was out of luck.
  • Visitors and members wanted different things from the same homepage: one group needed convincing, the other just needed the tee sheet and the shop.

The approach

How we got there

  1. Design for two visits, not one

The homepage leads with the course and the club for a first-time visitor, then gets out of the way fast for a member who already knows what they want.

  2. A shop that doesn’t keep hours

The pro shop moved online in full, not as an afterthought bolted onto a brochure site, so it could sell whenever a member happened to think of it.

  3. Design, build and ship, solo

One person end to end: design, front-end build and launch, on an eight-week timeline set by the club’s own calendar.

The outcome

What shipped

A site that welcomes a stranger and gets out of a member’s way, with a shop that’s open whenever they are.

Designed, built and shipped by me alone, front to back, in eight weeks.
