The brief

Safety assessments pull evidence from many systems and teams. Centrus puts it all in one place: gather evidence, assess risk, report.

I designed across the platform with toxicologists and data scientists. The science leads. The software follows.

What was in the way

Before Centrus, a translational safety assessment meant working across several disconnected systems by hand:

• Evidence scattered across separate tools, spreadsheets and shared drives, with no single record of where an assessment stood.
• No shared view of status, ownership or open questions, so toxicologists and data scientists chased each other for context that should have been visible.
• Reporting was a manual assembly job at the end of the process, done under time pressure, by the people best placed to be doing science instead.

How we got there

   Domain immersion

   Sessions with the toxicologists and data scientists who run these assessments, to see where the real friction was rather than assume it.

2. 02

   One workflow, not one screen

   The information architecture follows the assessment itself: evidence gathered in, judgement applied in the middle, a report produced out. Every screen sits on that spine.

3. 03

   Prototype in front of the people who’d use it

   Clickable prototypes tested with practising scientists, not proxies, and revised until the workflow matched how an assessment actually gets made.

   Ship on the shared system

   Screens built on InstemUX components, so Centrus reads as part of one product suite rather than a platform of its own.

What shipped

A single home for assessment work, built on the workflow scientists already had in their heads rather than one imposed on them.

Centrus is live and in active use, and now the foundation the wider product suite builds on. Instem’s client confidentiality means I can write about how it was designed and why, but not show the interface itself or quote outcome figures. The honest version of this case study is process, not a screenshot gallery.
